This cir 1910 Manuel Nunes style 2 soprano ukulele with early cloud inlay was sold by Sherman, Clay & CO. This ukulele was made cir 1910 by famed luthier Manuel Nunes, Nunes came to Hawaii from Madeira on the Ravenscrag in August of 1879 along with Jose do Esprito Santos and Augusto Dias. All three were cabinet makers but were contracted to work on the sugar plantations and after they fulfilled their contracts all three settled down in Honolulu and were instrumental in the introduction of a new instrument called the Ukulele. As can be seen in the photos this 110+ year old Hawaiian ukulele is in nice condition with beautiful figured Hawaiian Koa. The most interesting thing about this rare ukulele is that the Sherman Clay label is placed over a different label I have not been able to identify it yet, it is a mystery waiting to be solved.
